MILLENNIUM
NATUROPATHIC
PHILOSOPHY
Philosophy has
changed over time and today, and in many professions, it is all that is
left in guiding our ethics. Originally, the word
"philosophy"
was derived from a Greek word, phileîn,
"to love," and sophía,
"wisdom”. Today should we not love our
modern American home developed Naturopathic philosophy and thus,
our philosophy would be one of using our leaned wisdom to cure the ails
of the sick, the suffering, the poor, the weak, the disabled and the
elderly? And also prevent folks from becoming ill.
Our philosophy in naturopathic
medicine then, is we prefer to enjoy and have a sense of wonderment
about life and the world, about ourselves, our experience, our place in
the universe as a whole, which brings each and everyone of us together
to care for the sick. We take oath to nature and recognize that science
is the discovery of the answers to the secrets of nature. And thus our
dedication is to science an to lead in the search for medical answers.
Throughout all of our endeavors, we will maintain our first principle
Primum Non Nocere, First do no harm.
To follow in this exact foundation; if a medicine of equal benefit can
be made of “natural” matter, then this is always a priorii in our care.
Thus our philosophy is
reflectively concerned with the methods our practitioners employ in
the effort to resolve disease as well as to the overall care of the
patient.
This then warranties our first principal of Primum Non Nocere. And
thus, our Naturopathic Medical ethics are a set of rules and regulations
devised to guide us as physicians in determining whether our personal
conduct is right or wrong, defined in modern terms. It is through
Naturopathic philosophy that our physicians develop a “right conscience”
among our individual members and that such a “conscience” will
demonstrate an outcome for the greater good, and always performing
unanswerably the right medicine.
Thus our second
protocol is that we will always cure with “natural” means first when
able. Naturopathic medicine recognizes our origin as a species, and
understands that our physiologic inherent systems were designed for
natural medicines as we evolved for hundreds of thousands of years
eating them as foods, and in consideration of the fact that many of
today’s medicines were again, once thought of as our foods or herbal
remedies throughout our human experiential existence.
Thus,
naturopathic ethics reject the notion of an inorganic medicine which is
not natural as Primum Non
Nocere
is the Shield of our
Vis Medicatrix Naturae; the healing power of
nature. We will always first strive to do no harm in the care of the
ill and to support and use the healing power of nature.
We believe that we must protect and nourish the patients “nature” while
curing their ails. Now it is clear, that we as a profession will not
inhibit the natural healing abilities but support the body during
disease so to cure a recuperating person rather than to try to cure or
injure a patient simultaneously by inorganic medications done
consciously or unconsciously.
Our sword is our
ability to share our medical design to aid Mother Nature in all of
mankind and thus we become the
Docere; the teacher. We must pledge to
teach our medicine to all who wish to care for the ill and especially
our colleagues in traditional medicine.
Our steed is Tolle Totum or to care for the whole individual.
Thus, we care for the complete person and recognize that every person is
different. Thus as we support the sick with proper nutrition and
recuperative medicine, we then also care for the illness. Again first
with natural medicine but if needed, with
surgery.
Our armor Tolle Causum;
the whole cause. We will care for the
psychological component, the physiological component, the environmental
components, and support the vital natural force of life with the latest
medicine of today. We will avoid when possible the need for synthetic
medications with side affects and long-term toxicities, or which
consumes the vital process or becomes suppressive to overall vitality
when needed in addition to the pharmacologic actions
of medications.
Born of “Mother nature”, and when confronted by illness, we will return
the patient back to the health of living vitality and nature absent the
continued need for long term medications which may have reactions
against “nature” and “natural processes”.
And from this pinnacle of medical ethics
the naturopathic physician must swear to uphold these principals and
thus:
1.
To elevate
the standing of the profession in the public mind and to strengthen
public confidence in the correct medical course.
2.
To develop
and maintain complete support and cooperation of the public in nature’s
laws of exercise, sanitation, cleanliness, calmness, kindness, diet and
avoid excess.
3.
To always
strive for full coordination of effort in all medical relationships with
professions until the time of reason where all physicians will
also become
Naturopathic Physicians by taking oath to nature as we are all
inexorably part of nature, and not bow to noble men of the past, nor
gods nor goddess.
6. To know
Naturopathic Medicine is an honorable profession, and to recognize in it
an opportunity to render a worthwhile and just service to mankind’s sick
and help Mother Nature.
The Naturopathic
Physician shall not:
1. Be dishonest
2. Be brutal
3. Demonstrate
racial prejudice
4. Shall not
violate the laws, regulations nor ethics of Naturopathy
5. Deliberate
ineffectively
6. Fail to
improve as a physician in practice.
7. Divulge
confidential patient information
8. Ever conduct
themselves with malicious gossip
9. Make
disparaging comments about other Disciplines
10. Violate
privileged communications either written or spoken.
Having read the
above principals, I now so Swear:
I swear to treat
the whole person and not be swayed only by the symptoms of a patient.
I swear to serve
mankind; to safeguard lives to protect the innocent against deception,
the weak against oppression, intimidation
and disease. In that pursuit I will
care for the ill with the best of my abilities and according to
my judgment.
I swear to
always cure with natural means first. I recognize our origin as a
species.
And I swear to First of all, do no
harm. I will act in cooperation with the Healing Power of Nature and
address the fundamental causes of disease, while healing the whole
person through individualized care. I will always teach the principles
of healthy living and preventative natural medicine.
I swear to keep
my private life unsullied as an example to all; and maintain courageous
calm in the face of emergency medicine; develop self-restraint; and be
constantly mindful of the welfare of others. I will be exemplary in
obeying the laws of the land and the regulations of my discipline.
Whatever I see or hear of a confidential nature, or that is confided in
me in my official capacity as a physician, it will be kept secret unless
revelation is necessary in the performance of my duty.
I will never act
officiously or permit personal feelings, prejudices, animosities or
friendships to influence my medical decisions. With no compromise and
with relentless dedication to the prophylactic prevention of disease and
the care and return to natural health from disease all members of the
public trust, as a primary care physician, I recognize my position as a
Naturopathic Doctor. And to that end, I swear to uphold the highest
calling ethically, and scientifically, and I accept the public trust to
be held so long as I am true to the ethics of the Naturopathic
Profession.
I will
continually strive to improve my abilities as a healer through research,
reflection and continuing medical education and study. I swear to
always advance with science and thus only offer the state of the art
care to my patients.
I will offer
only safe medications and never a deadly remedy to a patient who
requests it according to my ability and judgment; And I will keep
them and all patients from harm and injustice...
I will honor my
professors and all who have preserved and contributed to this knowledge
and dedicate myself to supporting the needs of the public, and to the
growth and continuing scientific progress of Naturopathic medicine.
I will impart
this body of science and clinical medicine to dedicated colleagues and
students and with my best ability and judgment; I will use only methods
of care which follow the principals as set forth in this oath for
naturopathic medicine.
I will
constantly strive to achieve these objectives and medical ideals,
dedicating myself this day before God, and before this gathering of
witnesses, to my chosen path and join hands with all those who walked
before me, and to all those who will walk ahead of me; I pledge this
_________ day of the ______ month, two thousand and four, that I will
remain true to this oath, as a Physician and Surgeon within the medical
discipline of Naturopathic Medicine. May God bless us, and keep us as
whole, in our pursuit of sophisticated principals of Naturopathic
Medicine and philosophy.
For
a profession steeped in fraud, hucksterism,
anti-insurance, revenge medicine, which in my humanity, if they would
follow this documented leadership albeit from an outsider, would become,
something more in the vein of "all that is good for mankind". Only
a complete reversal in their ways as outlined in this document will
bring America honest and safe Naturopathic care.
